1. Interviewing the preschoolers
Students worked together to create a list of survey questions we would ask the preschoolers. These questions were to help us learn more about the preschoolers' preferences and spark ideas of how we could paint the library. We went to the preschool and buddied up with the same preschool class. The students did a beautiful job of guiding their buddies through the survey questions, and even encouraging some preschoolers to write in their responses themselves! After completing the survey, the students spent time enjoying some good books with their buddies :)
2. Data collection
Back at school, we compiled all of our data. We had one large piece of chart paper for each question, and the students posted their buddy's response on the appropriate piece of chart paper using a sticky note. Then, the students paired up and chose a survey question to analyze and graph. We used bar graphs and a pie chart to organize the data.
Interpreting and graphing data can be quite challenging, but as usual, the students rose to the challenge! They created clear and accurate graphs that helped inform the next steps of our process.
3. Design boards
As a class we made observations about what the data tells us about the preschoolers' preferences. We pointed out trends, clear favorites, and started sharing out ideas about designs we could paint that incorporated these favorite things.
Then, each student got some time to create their own "design board." On this board, students tried to come up with a theme for the library, a color palette, and a sample design that they had in mind. The students used the data we collected to inform their design choices. We did a gallery walk of our design boards and would use these ideas to choose a theme for the library.
4. Choosing a theme
It's easy for one student to come up with an idea and run with it. it is REALLY REALLY HARD for 20 students to all come to an agreement about a theme, stick to it, and be excited about it. Actually, it is REALLY REALLY HARD for any group of 20 people to come to an agreement, stick to it, and be excited about it!
At this point in the year I really shouldn't be so shocked when this group of students blows my expectations out of the water...but I still am! They tackled this REALLY REALLY HARD task of choosing a theme in such a kind, inspiring way. It was so wonderful to see the students celebrate each other's creativity, build off of another's ideas, and amicably make decisions through very fair voting processes.
The students decided on the theme colorbomb! We agreed on a rainbow color palette, with slightly different patterns on each face of the library. The theme aligns with the students' preferences, and is very appropriate for a preschool setting.
5. Painting jobs
After deciding on the theme and general layout for each face of the library, students applied for a specific face of the library that they wanted to paint. There were about 3-4 students working on each side. First the groups had to work together to create a more detailed draft for the layout, colors, and designs they would use for their specific side.
6. Last but certainly not least...PAINTING!
We owe Ms. Vinetz a HUGE thank you for helping us throughout so much of this painting process, we couldn't have done it without her! Ms. Vinetz was the one who bought our paint, and explained the different steps we need to take to ensure high quality painting.First, we primed the entire library. Then we needed to sand down the primer down so that it was smooth and ready for the base coat. Second came the light blue base coat that covers the entire outside of the library. Finally it was time for the details and design! Throughout each step we had to continue going back to add second coats and touch up our work. The students were so thoughtful about their work and took their time, it looks more beautiful than I can put into words!
I have purposefully not included picture of the final product, you will have to wait to see the library at Exhibition this Tuesday night!!!
