Project Description
Being able to read is more than a way to stay entertained, it is a gateway into the world. During this project, second grade students at HTeNC will learn about literacy and the importance of access to books. First, the students designed and built a freestanding library that will be donated to a preschool in our community.
In this second half of the project, students worked together to write and illustrate books. Students tapped into their creativity and knowledge base to write a cohesive, interesting, and original story for a preschool-aged audience. They learned and implemented strategies for successful story writing, as well as a new illustrating technique. As a group, students made compromises, problem solved and learned how to share the workload.

Chapter 2
This project is split into two "Chapters." In Chapter two, we will focus on filling the library! We will study different types of literature, and explore illustration techniques. In small groups they will write and illustrate books for the library. We will also hold a book drive to collect more books for the library. During this time we will be in Science exploratory with Mrs. Lee! In Science, students will learn about California Sandy Beaches. With this knowledge, students will write and illustrate a nonfiction sensory book about the beach to contribute to the library.
